Regional Weimar Triangle successfully back in person - Annual review 2022

In 2021, the Regional Weimar Triangle, the trilateral regional partnership between North Rhine-Westphalia, the French Region of Hauts-de-France and the Polish Voivodeship of Silesia, celebrated its 20th anniversary. The cooperation mainly takes place within the framework of three established formats, which are hosted annually by the three regions in turn. These are: a youth exchange, a cultural project and an expert exchange focusing on economic transformation. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the formats were continued digitally. In 2022, young people, artists and experts came together again in person. Other activities complemented the agenda of the Regional Weimar Triangle.

The so-called "Youth Summit" from 24 to 30 July marked the beginning of the annual activities. 45 young people aged between 17 and 23, 15 from each region, opened the future workshop "City - Country - Mobility - How do we want to live in our regions?" in Münster. The focus was on sustainable and future transport as well as on housing concepts. The programme was shaped by expert lectures, excursions and leisure activities. The highlight of the youth exchange was a discussion with the Minister for Home Affairs, Municipal Affairs, Building and Equality of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Ina Scharrenbach, the Vice-Marshal for Education and Culture of the Silesian Voivodeship, Beata Białowąs, and the Regional Councillor of the Hauts-de-France Region, Antoine Sillani, responsible for youth affairs and volunteering.

The three regions also participated in the 20th European Week of Regions and Cities, organised annually by the Committee of the Regions and the European Commission's Directorate-General REGIO. The online workshop "Working Europe - The future of education and work form young people's perspective", which was part of the thematic pillar #Youth Empowerment, allowed not only experts but also young people from the three regions to have their say.

Things continued in Amiens in Hauts-de-France from 24 to 26 October. The Hauts-de-France region, together with Nord France Invest and the regional association of the automotive industry ARIA, had invited experts from the three regions to an exchange on electro mobility and battery technology in the automotive sector. In line with the important role the automotive industry plays in the regions of the Regional Weimar Triangle, the challenges for the time after 2035 were considered, which is when the combustion engine will be banned as adopted by the European Union. The participants from business, science and administration exchanged views on various issues and visited regional battery research centres and production facilities for electric cars.

Since the end of November, students from the Technical Universities of Dortmund and Gliwice in Silesia and the École Centrale de Lille in Hauts-de-France have been working together for the first time in an interdisciplinary seminar. The cooperation of three technical universities was initiated by the regional governments of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Hauts-de-France region and the Silesian Voivodeship. In the course of the seminar, the students will develop objects in mixed teams with the help of design thinking. They receive support from lecturers at the three universities.
